Steve Marshall, Founder State of EmergencyFounded in 1986 by Steve Marshall and Deborah Baddoo, State of Emergency started out as a performing group, sometimes a band, sometimes a club act, sometimes a dance company, sometimes all of these in one. The company went on to become a platform for artistic innovation and talent.
Founded at a time of political turmoil in the world, and in Britain, the company was named after the state of emergencies imposed by the apartheid regime in South Africa in the 1980s. For us, the name represents the company’s aim to be ever ready – always alert and alive to rapidly changing circumstances and conditions.
